What to expect
Our 8-week classes meet once a week for eight weeks. In addition to the weekly 2½-hour class session, students are encouraged to take advantage of open studio hours* when classes are not in session to practice, experiment, and develop their skills at their own pace.
*Open studio hours are subject to availability and need to be reserved in advance.
Whether you’re working with clay for the first time or continuing your ceramics journey, our classes provide the space, instruction, and studio access to help you grow your skills and creativity.

8 Week Classes

In addition to your class, tuition includes access to studio glazes and slips, community tools, firings for class projects, and access to all open studio hours (open studio hours are subject to change).
Class tuition includes firing for up to 10 medium-sized pieces (such as cups, bowls, or mugs). To help us manage kiln space and keep turnaround times reasonable for all students, additional pieces and oversized work may require additional firing fees. Extra kin space for purchase when available.

8 Week Students should bring the following to class:
a small bucket (approx. 2 quarts) for water
an apron or towel
a small towel or microfiber cloth for clean up
a beginner tool kit including a small sponge, basic trimming tools, a wood and metal rib, a needle tool, and a wire. Purchase HERE or at a local art supplies store

Classes are intentionally kept to 6–10 students per session. This class size allows for plenty of individual instruction and guidance while also creating a fun, supportive, and social studio environment.

Clay is available for purchase through the studio and is not included in tuition. We offer a variety of clay bodies to choose from, each suited for different types of projects and firing temperatures. (Don’t worry, we can help you choose the perfect clay during your first class.) Purchasing clay directly from the studio helps ensure that all materials work well with our kilns and firing process. Silk City Clay does not permit the use of clay purchased outside the studio for these reasons.
Basic community tools are available for student use, though we recommend purchasing a beginner tool kit so you’ll always have the tools you need during class and open studio sessions.

We are unable to offer refunds for missed classes. However, if a class is missed students are encouraged to communicate with their instructor about the possibility of shadowing another class when space is available.
Students are also welcome to use Open Studio hours to continue practicing and stay on track with class projects.

Our classes are open to students ages 15+ and welcome to all experience levels, from complete beginners to more experienced ceramic artists looking to continue developing their skills. Whether you’re trying clay for the first time or returning to the studio after years away, our classes are designed to provide a supportive, creative, and encouraging learning environment for everyone.

Note: There are 3 steps from the parking lot into the Armory building where we are located.

Classes are typically paid in full at the time of registration.
Payment plans with a $100.00 non refundable deposit are an option for those who request it, and require that a card be kept on file to process any remaining balances. Typically, the balance is due paid in full for the term before the first day of class. If other arrangements are made, the card on file will be charged according to the payment arrangement and a receipt will be sent after each payment is processed.

Each class is limited to 6–10 participants to ensure plenty of individual instruction. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

You’ll need to bring a towel to wipe your hands and to clean up afterwards. We also suggest brining an apron to help keep clay off your cloths. We supply tools and clay!

Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little messy, along with closed-toe shoes for safety in the studio. Since this is a wheel throwing class, we recommend keeping finger nails shorter if possible, as longer nails can make working on the wheel challenging.
We also suggest tying back long hair and removing rings, bracelets, and watches before class.

During class, students are given 1 ½ lbs of clay. Instructors will walk you through the steps to make simple beginner friendly forms such as cups, bowls, and small vases.
Students can expect to make 1 - 3 pieces during the 90 min session and may choose to keep any 2 pieces to have glazed and fired.

If you are interested in learning to make more complex forms, or forms that require attachments such as handles, we recommend one of our 8 week classes. Making these items requires more time and extra steps with drying time in-between.

No, our expert staff will complete any trimming that your piece may need. We will also dip glaze your pots in a food safe glaze of your choice.

Clay Nights are recommended for ages 13+

About 4-6 weeks. Each piece must be trimmed, fully dried, then fired, glazed, and fired a second time. We will contact you when your pottery is ready to be picked up.
